Questions about merino wool
What is Merino Wool?
What is the difference between merino wool and regular wool?
Merino wool is finer and softer than regular wool, making it much more comfortable to wear. It is also more odor resistant and more breathable than regular wool.

Where does merino wool come from?
Merino wool comes from the Merino sheep breed, a breed that originated in Spain. Today, these sheep are raised in many countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Uruguay and South Africa.
The majority of the wool we use comes from Australian sheep.
How to care for merino wool clothes?
Merino wool garments can be machine washed at a warm temperature. It is recommended to use a mild detergent and dry the garments flat to avoid them losing their shape.

Is merino wool hypoallergenic?
Merino wool is considered hypoallergenic because it does not contain any chemicals or synthetic fibers that could irritate the skin.
It is naturally resistant to bacteria and odors, which can help prevent skin irritations associated with allergies and skin reactions. All of these characteristics make merino wool an ideal choice for those with sensitive skin or allergies.
Is merino wool eco-friendly?
Merino wool is an eco-friendly fiber because it is natural, biodegradable and renewable, unlike synthetic fibers.
Additionally, for the well-being of Merino sheep, their wool must be sheared regularly to avoid health problems linked to too much wool accumulation.
Our wool comes from sheep that are raised humanely and sustainably, further reducing the environmental impact of this natural resource.
Why is merino wool expensive?
Merino wool is expensive for several reasons:
- Premium Quality : Merino wool is very soft, fine and lightweight, while providing excellent temperature and moisture regulation. These characteristics make it a high-end material, particularly sought after for technical and outdoor clothing.
- Production process : Merino sheep farming requires specific conditions to ensure the quality of the wool, which includes special care for the animals and their environment. This involves high costs for maintaining the flocks, especially for sustainable and humane breeding practices.
- Limited Quantity : Unlike synthetic fibers that can be mass produced, merino wool relies on the sheep's natural cycles. A merino sheep only produces a limited amount of wool per year, which contributes to the rarity and value of this fiber.
- Processing and treatment : Merino wool goes through several processing steps, such as cleaning, spinning and sometimes specific treatments to improve its properties, such as pilling resistance. This complex process also adds to its final cost.
- Local manufacturing : At Timininous, we favor local manufacturing in Quebec, which not only reduces the carbon footprint related to transportation, but also guarantees ethical working conditions and support for the local economy. This responsible approach comes at a cost, but it reflects our commitment to quality and sustainability.

What does RWS certification mean?
The Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) is an international certification standard for responsible wool production. The standard was developed to ensure animal welfare, environmental sustainability and good social practices in wool production. RWS certification aims to ensure that sheep are raised responsibly, without being subjected to cruelty, neglect or inappropriate living conditions. It also requires farmers to practice sustainable land management, protecting local ecosystems and reducing the environmental impact of wool production. In addition, RWS certification ensures that workers involved in wool production are treated fairly and work in safe and healthy conditions. RWS certification is issued by independent certification bodies, who verify that RWS standards have been met throughout the wool supply chain.
What does Woolmark certification mean?
Woolmark certification is granted to products that meet strict criteria for quality, performance and durability. Woolmark certified products must be made from high quality wool, be hardwearing, provide effective thermal insulation, be easy to maintain and clean, and meet sustainability and environmental responsibility standards.
What does Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification mean?
The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification is an international standard for textiles that guarantees the absence of substances harmful to human health and the environment. Textile products that bear the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 label have been tested and certified to not contain chemicals harmful to health, such as heavy metals, pesticides, azo dyes, formaldehydes, among others. The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification is based on independent tests carried out by accredited laboratories, which verify the presence of these substances in textiles.
What does g/m2 mean?
The number of g/m2 (grams per square meter) or GSM (grams per square meter), is a measure of the density of merino wool in a fabric or knit, also called grammage.
This measurement is used to assess the weight or thickness of wool fabric, which can have implications on its use and performance.
More specifically, the gsm number indicates the weight of merino wool per square meter of fabric. A higher value generally means a denser and heavier fabric, while a lower value indicates a lighter fabric.
A fabric with a higher g/m2 count will generally have better thermal insulation, as it contains more wool fibres per unit area.
For example, our fleece wool has a weight of 360 g/m² and the wool we use for our base layers varies between 200 and 250 g/m².
What does micron mean?
This is the measure of the fineness of the wool.
The diameter of a merino wool fiber is measured in microns. The lower the micron number, the finer the wool.
Interesting fact: a human hair measures on average 50 microns… The majority of the merino wool we use at Timininous is 18.5 microns! This means that a merino wool yarn is really very very fine!
So here are the ways to categorize the different types of wool according to their microns:
Less than 15 Microns
This is truly the cream of the crop in terms of fineness. These fibers are extremely soft and luxurious. This wool is categorized as "ultrafine."
It is very rare, very expensive and reserved for delicate projects.
From 15 to 19 microns
Fibers in this category are called “super fine” and offer exceptional softness.
These are the fibers that we mainly use for our clothes.
Superfine merino wool can only be produced in small quantities, which increases the price of this quality of wool.
From 19.5 to 24 microns
This type of mid-quality merino wool, offering a good balance between softness and durability.
It is used for close-fitting clothing, but also for blazers.
Microns greater than 24
Merino wools with more than 24 microns are considered relatively thick and rough.
They are used for items where softness is not the priority, such as making rugs.
